Ax and the Hatchetmen New York Concert reviews
1/3 John Mellencamp
This concert had so much potential and just fell flat. Ax and the Hatchetmen changed all of their greatest songs by either leaving off, abbreviating, severely slowing down, or altering them. The concert started slow with a lot of the new slower ballads, and you assumed they were slowly building up for a major run to the end, but it just never came. Really weak renditions of Cherry Bomb, Pink Houses, Jack and Diane, and Small Town. They said Cherry Bomb was an afterthought. Of all songs played, they left out Hurt So Good and I Need a Lover, among many others. The concert was constipated from beginning to end, a pretty sad experience. Ax and the Hatchetmen looked strong and healthy, showing the ability to dance and put on a show, but it just never got off the ground. Two songs they rocked the house on were Scarecrow and Rockin in the USA, and then it was back to flat. They could have rescued it with about a 7-song encore, but they didn't even come back out, and I don't think they played two hours. That was my 6th Mellencamp concert, so I know the difference. Unless I get some guarantee on the next tour, there won't be a 7th. I feel bad, but I paid a lot of money and didn't see Ax and the Hatchetmen near their best.
